This crunchy sugarless granola is my favorite way to bring fall into the kitchen. It has apple puree, cinnamon and lots of nuts, and it bakes into big golden clusters. It is an easy gluten free granola, and the only sweetness comes from date syrup or honey and apple puree.
The recipe is simple. This gf granola needs one bowl, one pot and one baking tray, and the oven does the rest. One batch of this gluten free oat granola works for breakfast, snacks and even dessert.
Ways to enjoy this sugarless granola
This gluten free peanut butter granola goes a long way. Here are my favorite ways to use it:
- Pour cold plant based milk over it for a gluten free homemade cereal
- Spoon it over yogurt or dairy free yogurt for a quick breakfast
- Add it on top of fresh fruit or a smoothie bowl
- Sprinkle it over warm baked apples for a cozy dessert
- Eat it by the handful as a snack (or make my peanut butter oat bars when you want something sweeter)
- Pack it in a small jar and take it with you
Gluten free granola ingredients
You only need seven everyday ingredients for a healthy gluten free granola:
- 250 g (about 2 3/4 cups) certified gluten free oats
- 100 g (3.5 oz) mixed nuts
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 60 g (about 3 tbsp) date syrup or honey
- 100 g (scant 1/2 cup) apple puree
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- 50 ml (3 1/2 tbsp) coconut oil
For the nuts, I used a store bought mix of hazelnuts, cashews, almonds and pecans, plus some regular walnuts. The peanut butter adds a rich, nutty flavor, and the apple puree brings a soft fall sweetness. There is no butter here, only coconut oil, so it is a dairy free granola too. For a vegan gf granola, use date syrup instead of honey.
If you like the taste of dates, you will also love these date energy balls. To keep everything gluten free, check the labels on your peanut butter, date syrup and apple puree!
How to make sugarless granola with apple
Making sugarless granola at home is easy. You mix, warm, stir and bake.
Mix the dry ingredients
Add the oats, nuts and cinnamon to a large bowl and mix well.
Warm the wet ingredients
In a pot, gently warm the date syrup (or honey), apple puree, peanut butter and coconut oil over medium heat. Heat just until everything comes together. It should not boil.
Combine and spread
Pour the warm mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is coated. Spread it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake the granola
Bake at 150-160°C (300-320°F) for 30-35 minutes. Stir once around the 10-15 minute mark, then leave it alone so the clusters stay big. Keep an eye on it and lower the temperature if it browns too fast.
Cool and store
The granola may look a bit soft when it comes out, but it hardens as it cools. Let it cool completely on the tray, then break it into pieces and store it in a glass jar.
